When it comes to proven natural muscle builders and strength enhancers, your options have traditionally been fairly limited. Creatine, and more recently Betaine, have really been the only two non-hormonal supplements scientifically proven to increase skeletomuscular performance. Cue Phosphatidic Acid; recent studies have emerged proving it to be more effective than both Creatine and Betaine at increasing hypertrophy and strength.
Where’s the proof?
In a double-blind study published in the Journal of the International Study of Sports Nutrition, scientists took circumference measurements and DEXA scans of the rectus femoris in 28 seasoned weightlifters. They then split the group into two – one group was given a placebo, and the other supplemented with 1500mg of Phosphatidic Acid daily.
Over the course of 8 weeks, the Phosphatidic Acid group increased the size of their thighs by nearly double that of the placebo group (1.01cm vs 0.61cm), showed DOUBLE the increase in lean mass than the placebo group (2.4kg vs 1.2kg), and could leg press significantly more weight that the placebo group (52.0kg vs 32.5kg). Body composition scans also showed a decrease of body fat in the Phosphatidic Acid of nearly triple that of the placebo group (-1.3kg vs -0.5kg).
So… what is it? What’s the mechanism of action?
Phosphatidic Acid is the acid form of phosphatidate, which is one of the major building blocks of cell membranes. They’re one of the key components that go into creating phospholipids within your body, which are then used to facilitate cell growth and proliferation.
Phosphatidic Acid, when integrated into a regimen that includes a solid weightlifting routine, will activate the mTOR pathway – this is the pathway by which all muscle cell protein synthesis is regulated. Through supplementing additional Phosphatidic Acid in the form of a supplement, you activate more mTOR. Through activating more mTOR, you’ll facilitate more muscular growth and increase your strength as a result.
For optimal results, consume 1500mg of Phosphatidic Acid (MuscleTech Performance Series Phospha Muscle) 1 hour before training.
